Emerging Literacy Skills and Phonological Awareness: Developing Guidelines
for Preschool
Sammie Brian - The Langsford Center
This session will highlight age appropriate activities to develop and strengthen
phonological awareness in preschool children. Participants will learn the
scope and sequence phonological awareness development for preschoolers and
take away hands-on activities for any emerging literacy classroom.
A Good Book + Simple Supplies = Great Learning Tools
Kathy Attaway and Maureen O’Brien – The Chance School
Want more out of a good book than five or ten minutes of circle time? We
will show you some of the teacher-made games and activities we’ve used
to increase the appreciation and use of a good book that will have your children
asking to read it again.
Mini-Masters
Jaci Sloan – The Lexington School
This unit is a formal introduction to various visual artists, their lives and
their masterpieces. Independent thinking, cooperation, organization and responsibility
are addressed with this developmentally appropriate unit.
The Best Picture Books of 2006
Lisa Howie – The Chance School’s former Preschool Program Coordinator
A review of the best picture book published in 2006 for young children according
to a myriad of sources. Discussion on using them as a starting point for curriculum
and extension activities. Resources for finding the best books of any year.
Earth Science for the K-1 Classroom
Eric Stevens – The Chance School
A cross-curricular approach to incorporating earth science into kindergarten/first
grade classrooms that will have your students doing math, art, reading, writing
and music while learning basic scientific concepts concerning the world around
them.
The Independent School Parent: What Experience and the NAIS Have to Offer
Brian Archibald – Head of Lower School, Walden School
This presentation takes a look at working effectively with independent school
parents. Areas of focus include: conferencing, conflict management, maintaining
a healthy relationship with parents and a look at the NAIS (National Association
of Independent Schools) publication, Understanding Independent School Parents.

From Phonemic Awareness to Phonics to Spelling and Writing: Making the Connection
Kindergarten and first Grade
Sammie Brian – The Langsford Center
The transition from phonemic awareness to sequential phonics instruction
will be highlighted and different phonics methods will be analyzed. Practical
application of these skills within the writing process will also be discussed.
Instructional methods and hands-on activities are given for immediate use
