General Information:
Capital Day School is an independent school for Pre-Kindergarten classes through the eighth grade. The school stresses the highest standards of academic pursuit and personal development.
Capital Day School achieves academic standards through knowledgeable and stimulating instruction carried on in small classes, thus creating a caring atmosphere. The school places a strong emphasis on reading, mathematics, creative and expository writing, science, languages, and the arts.
The school is divided into three divisions: the Preschool (ages 3-4), the Lower School (grades K-4) and the Middle School (grades 5-8). Using a developmentally structured curriculum, the Preschool provides a foundation for social, physical and educational development.
The Lower School stresses fundamentals but enhances the curriculum with special interdisciplinary units and classes in art, music, technology, French, and physical education. Students participate on sports and academic teams and enjoy field trips and dramatic productions.
The Middle School combines an accelerated program with many enrichment activities including music, art, and drama. Field studies are a vital part of the curriculum. As students advance through the middle grades, they study math and science at the Alabama Space Center, art nonfiction reading and architecture in Chicago, the government and history in Washington, D.C. and marine life in Key Largo. Interdisciplinary units are a integral part of both core and special classes.
Capital Day School is accredited by the Independent Schools Association of the Central States. The school is also a member of the National Association of Independent Schools and the National Middle Schools Association.
