Mission Statement:
The founding of Chance School was based on Virginia Chance’s progressive educational philosophy that young children should be respected as unique individuals in order to reach their full potential. From its inception the philosophy broke away from rigid teaching practices, recognized each child as an individual, employed creative teaching, and helped parents understand the stages of growth and development and the use of positive guidance.
While this was an extraordinary approach in the 1950s, today the many benefits of Mrs. Chance's vision are supported by the findings of child development theorists and researchers. Widely acclaimed for this distinctive program, Chance School has been a cornerstone in early childhood education in Jefferson County and has served as a successful model for teachers and administrators around the state of Kentucky and around the country.
General Information:
Strong healthy self-esteem is vital to developing positive attitudes about learning and living together in a democratic society. Self-esteem must be nurtured daily as it emerges within a child’s cognitive, social, emotional, moral, and physical development.
Childhood is a continuous and unfolding process of growing, learning and developing. The habits, skills and attitudes acquired during childhood form a foundation for their future. Children advance through successive stages of development and each child progresses in his/her own special way and time. When adults use these stages of growth and development and respect individual needs and differences, they can help children develop healthy self-esteem and discipline.
Chance School provides an environment that nurtures a child’s self-confidence in his/her whole being. We know that learning can not be separated from experience; therefore, day by day, we empower children to construct knowledge through active engagement, first-hand involvement and social interaction. Formal and informal experiences that are relevant to children challenge and stimulate learning, thinking, creativity, and socialization and emotional growth. As a child matures, these experiences expand and build connections with the real world.
At Chance School, we respect and celebrate individual and cultural diversity among all children. Positive developmental guidance from nurturing adults, both parents and teachers, help create a community that promotes discovery and encourages joy in learning.
I hear, and I forget.
I see, and I remember.
I do, and I understand.
