The mission of The Lexington School is to provide an education
of the highest quality to students in preschool through middle school.
In a structured, nurturing environment, The Lexington School
seeks to instill integrity, a life-long enthusiasm for learning,
and a strong work ethic.
Philosophy:
Because we are a nurturing environment, children feel confident.
When children are confident, they will take risks.
Because risk taking is inherent in learning, the possibility of failure exists.
When a nurturing community exists, challenges lead to growth.
Our success is defined when our students have the life skills
to make wise choices and overcome obstacles.
General Information:
Founded in 1959, The Lexington School enrolls academically promising girls and boys in preschool through eighth grade. In one way, we're a traditional school; that is we cover the core branches of knowledge. We're also, however, an innovative school: Using methods based on the latest research about how children learn, we help children "discover" principles and applications for themselves. The Lexington School aspires not merely to educate students, but to stretch their minds and to shape their lives. And if we do our work well, each of our graduates leaves here ready to shine in the world.
Lexington School students may be visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learners-and we teach in ways that support each style-but no Lexington School student is a passive learner. Guided by experienced, creative educators who love teaching here, our children start with their own sense of wonder, then follow their natural curiosity into learning that emerges variously from hands-on exploration, group projects, teacher-directed lessons, independent research, solo or team presentations, and increasingly higher levels of thinking.
Small classes, interdisciplinary learning, a stimulating variety of enrichment activities, and comfortable relationships with other students and adults characterize a Lexington School child's everyday experience. The formula works well: Consistently our students earn high scores on achievement tests, and, thanks to our accelerated curriculum, our graduates often find themselves far ahead of their new high school classmates in both academic knowledge and study skills.
Situated on 25 acres in the southwestern suburbs of Lexington, our campus includes a new lower school building, two gymnasiums, a fine arts wing, an art gallery, classroom computers and smart boards, state-of-the-art computer laboratories, a theater, a library of more than 20,000 volumes, three playgrounds, four soccer fields, and an outdoor basketball court.
We're always pleased to talk with new families who are interested in The Lexington School. Admission is selective and takes place year-round; financial assistance is available.
